It is the highest-altitude lake in the world, as well as the third-largest saline lake in China and the second-largest in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Situated within Damxung and Bangoin counties in Tibet, it sits at an elevation of 4,718 meters above sea level. The lake stretches 78.6 km east to west, up to 50 km north to south, with an average width of 24.4 km. According to 2015 measurements, Namtso covers an area of 2,020 km², has a maximum depth exceeding 95 m, and has a total storage capacity of approximately 87 billion cubic meters.

Namtso is known as the foremost of Tibet’s “Three Holy Lakes,” and holds the status of the primary sacred lake of the ancient Zhang Zhung Bon religion.
